What Is Competency Based Training (CBT)?

Competency Based Training or CBT is the type of training carried out in all accredited training courses offered at BGT.
Competency Based training is training which develops the skill, knowledge and attitudes required to achieve competency standards

At the commencement of each module (subject) you will be given an outline of those skills that you need to be competent in to pass that module. The list of skills is detailed in the Learning Outcomes of the course guide.

If you can demonstrate that you are already competent in all learning outcomes of a module, you may be eligible to have your existing knowledge recognised, and not attend the classes for that module.  Please discuss this with your trainer or the Training Manager.

How to attain accreditation

To be awarded the certificate for which you have enrolled you must:
attend at least 80% of all classes, or have obtained RPL, and
be assessed as competent in all modules of the course (see Course Outline for relevant course modules).  This means you must be deemed competent on each assessment you undertake for each module.
Assessment procedures
Outlines of course modules and details of assessments will be given to students by each module trainer at the commencement of the module.

After each assessment you will be deemed:

  • COMPETENT (you have achieved the set standard) or
  • NOT YET COMPETENT (at this point you do not have the skills, knowledge or experience to achieve the set standard).  To achieve competency you will need to discuss this matter further with the relevant trainer.

If you do not achieve competency at your first assessment you may negotiate with your supervisor and trainer to undertake additional training/practice to achieve the competency. Trainees are reminded that this may delay their certification and opportunities to progress with further training and/or employment.

Assessment appointments

If you are absent from work on the day of an assessment, you should make every effort to notify your trainer as well as the workplace in advance if possible. The assessment will need to be rescheduled.

Return of work

Please note that all work which is submitted for assessment must be retained on the learner file for the duration of the audit period (2 years). After this period all work may be collected by the author or it may be subject to security disposal.  It is strongly advised that trainees retain copies of all work submitted for assessment.

Assessment of special needs

BGT recognises the importance of basic skills in English language literacy and numeracy (LLN).
BGT will:

  • Ensure that all participants enrolled in training courses, are given the opportunity to learn based on the individual’s current competencies in LLN.
  • Identify individual levels of competencies in LLN for the purpose of identifying further vocational training or educational needs and where possible, tailor training programs to suit individual needs.

BGT Trainer's are responsible for acting upon information obtained where LLN and other individual needs are identified. Where individual needs are identified, action can be taken during the delivery of training and the assessment process to assist the participant by way of:

  • discussion between participant and Trainer to identify participant’s particular needs
  • reasonable adjustment of training delivery and assessment methods to suit these needs
  • one-on-one support provided during training delivery and progress monitored by Trainer to promote successful learning outcomes.

Needs Identification

Identification of training needs is to be based on the English language literacy and numeracy competencies, which are needed to participate effectively in vocational training. BGT will endeavour to obtain LLN information before commencement of course although the participant’s individual needs may not be identified until after the course has commenced. In this case the Manager and Trainer will consult to analyse necessary requirements to meet the participants’ individual needs. Where these needs cannot be met, a refund will be given to the participant.

Where support needs go beyond what can be met with reasonable adjustment during the training and assessment process, and additional support is required, BGT will direct participants to a literacy specialist. The BGT literacy specialist will contact the participant to organise an interview to determine the most appropriate course of action. Additional support may occur on a fee for service basis and be provided by the literacy specialist.

Equal Access

Access to training must be equal for all participants. BGT does not discriminate against participants whose needs are identified under the standards of LLN with regards to their enrolment in any current or future training courses. Where LLN levels are extremely low, BGT will provide information on where they can obtain assistance with their LLN issue. Ultimately it is the choice of participants as to whether or not they proceed with the enrolment.

Confidentiality

All information relating to participants gathered during needs identification, training and evaluation will remain confidential.

Participants will have access to any information gathered by BGT about them as defined in BGT’s Privacy Policy.
