Workplace Training
Traineeships are an opportunity to study for a qualification using the workplace as the classroom. The trainee and the supervisor work together towards fulfilling the requirements of the Certificate.
Training at BGT
At the commencement of the traineeship, the employer and BGT decide where training will be undertaken. The employer may choose to have training conducted at BGT, in which case the trainee will attend formal classes at the training rooms of BGT. The trainee will need to arrange appropriate time slots. This can be done through the workplace assessor.
Workplace assessment
BGT allocates a workplace assessor to the trainee. The workplace assessor visits the trainee at agreed times to assess the performance of the trainee. The performance needs to match with the national standards expected for the level of qualification being undertaken.
Homework and Assignments
Trainees may need to complete homework or assignments. This may occur when there are gaps between workplace training and the performance required for the nationally endorsed units within the Certificate. A trainee is encouraged to complete studies in any ‘quiet time’ they may have at work.
Responsibility of the Employer
The employer/supervisor undertakes to train the trainee in line with the Certificate chosen. Much of the training will be conducted at the workplace. It is recommended that the employer and trainee meet regularly to monitor progress.
Initial Contact
Once a traineeship has officially commenced, staff from BGT Training will visit the trainee and workplace supervisor. Specifics of the training program are agreed upon. A workplace trainer and assessor will visit the trainee within the next 3– 4 weeks allowing time for the trainee to settle into their new job.
Time Release
The employer chooses between the trainee being given time-release to attend BGT’s training rooms or conducting training themselves in the workplace. Should the training be conducted in the workplace, then it is the responsibility of BGT to ensure that it is to a national standard. Qualified workplace assessors undertake this role.
Level II Traineeships – 1.5 hours per week for full time trainees (Pro rata for part time)
Level III or IV Traineeships – 3.0 hours per week for full time trainees (Pro rata for part time)
Quality Programs
BGT is regularly audited by the Government to ensure that staff and training facilities meet national standards. Without this endorsement, no workplace training will be recognised with a qualification. BGT ensures that all administration associated with the training is correctly documented and nationally registered.
