Customised Trailer for Local Scouts

Customised Trailer for Local Scouts

The local 1st Alfredton Scout Group received a new custom built trailer today (Tuesday 14th September) from BGT, built and designed by students completing their Engineering certificate.

BGT provided the labor and skills through their completing Certificate II in engineering students in constructing the trailer specifically made to suit the scout group's requirements.

Volunteer Scout Group Leader, Rick Smolenaers commented that the trailer would be used for particular camping programs for the group transporting tents, canoes, cooking equipment, a hot water service and oven, with the first trip planned in December to Merrimbula.

"The trailer is fantastic as it is secure, waterproof and designed to fit all of our gear we take away on our trips and with tandem wheels it can be towed easily and is more economical," sail Mr Smolenaers.

Gavin Gracie the Industry Skills Centre trainer commented that it is a job well done by the students and a valuable lesson in how we can work with other local community organizations in providing them needed equipment.

"By completing the trailer at BGT the students were given a ‘real' project to work on allowing them to apply their skills of mig welding, oxy cutting, painting, auto - electrical applications and assembly," Mr Gracie said.

"It also provided experience in getting the trailer to be compliant with road regulations and safety aspects." he added.

Billy-Jack Morgan a BGT student completing his Certificate II in engineering was part of the construction of the trailer; he commented that at the beginning that he was not confident and didn't know how to build a trailer.

"Where do you start?" he said. "Once the frame was built and I had more of an idea of the process I enjoyed working on the trailer."

BGT in most cases try to provide a realistic framework for students completing their Certificate II in engineering. In the past other projects included body work on cars, trailer maintenance, basic automotive maintenance and customised projects with the labor provided free in all instances.
